This was SO BAMBA!!!

Imagine getting a call from your friend and neighbor saying, “May I come over and remove the Virginia Ivy from your tree?” That was my Mom! She carefully pried the Virginia Ivy from the tree and created this lacy, impossible sculpture she fondly called "Ivy Web”.

Looking back at these photos, I am reminded of my Mom’s unique vision- what she saw that no one else saw- she could see fluid translucency in complete opacity.

Sprites! Mom's work with Sprites was inspiring. It is one my favorites- and I loved that she disagreed with me about placement and positioning when we were locating this beautiful bronze Sprites. Seeing Sprites in the late summer light warms the heart!

The original tree was a Box Elder. With Sprites, she developed these distinct rhythmic cuts, and magically she maintained the rawness of these trunks, while also providing a recognizable geometry that allows the visitor to recognize proportion and scale of the fallen Box Elder tree.

Emilie’s intent and mission; was for all to understand these trees, relate to them, and ultimately she wanted us to become the caretakers of nature. @mikabrzezinski #womensculptors #powerofnature #spritesinsummer #outdoorsculpture #publicart #womeninsculpture #artoftheday
To continue our week focused on nature, this quote of my Mom's clearly shows her insight into raw beauty:

"In my wood work, particularly with the Titans and Ronde, where I use very old and dying tree trunks, the trunks I used are very evocative, and that is why I chose them."

We are celebrating nature this week with an amazing quote from my Mom about her work:

"The medium of wood, which I started using seriously in 1989, it was not new to me; new were the tools: the axe and the chainsaw. The material is warm and appealing, live, resilient, and full of memories: it has grain, knots, grown over wounds, cracks, and then surprises such as insect invasions, hollows, rot spots.

Eventually I found a process that kept me open to changes of mind, a freedom to express my inner instincts, to let myself go at the material. Within that process I learned to respect nature, to let it live on in my forms, to have a dialog with the wood."

Welcome to Mother Earth Week!

My Mom had a special connection to her most monumental trunk. It was an extremely personal sculpture for my Mom. She named it Mother Earth- and celebrated the knots and the burls of this massive white oak, as they were the guiding light for this form. The knots were Emilie’s cenotes of discovery, ensuring Mother Earth was prepared for its own unique next phase of life.

As Emilie said, “Nature has a grand design, and its manifestations unfold in imperfection and specificity.”

The era of the vessel for my Mom’s sculpture was pivotal and meaningful.

My Mom's vessels represent:

Life and Death

Beauty and Destruction

Celebration and Memorial

From her  chunky egg shaped bowls that have a fabulous impossibility to them- which is exactly how we feel when we experience her trunks!

To the bowls that reveal the age lines of the trees from every angle including the bark on one section — and Emilie’s chainsaw, and then chisel in action.....with the cuts of the tools competing with the perfect lines marking each year of the tree’s life.

To her flattened basin bowls that Mom charred with fire.

Each bowl stands on its own and not perfectly .. how boring it would be, and so unlike nature, to present anything but originality in each curve, chip, chisel, and cut....@mikabrzezinski #powerofart #womensculptors #powerofnature #natureheals
My Mom knew raw beauty. She knew form. She knew materiality. Being with her creations and reliving the three mediums she enjoyed- wood, bronze and resin; is an amazing experience of her world. The texture, the light, every cut is movement - it is her vision. I am thrilled that her legacy continues. My moms bowls are now in resin and bronze. She used three mediums in her career: wood, resin and bronze. For more info on the bowls go to her amazing website. Much more to come!! https://brzezinskiart.com/
A story of a sculptor, Emilie Brzezinski:

Emilie was committed to sharing the continuity of life by carving felled trees reclaimed from the forest. Emilie also cast her works in resin and in bronze as a further pursuit to understanding materiality, challenging ephemera, and exploring translucency and opacity. See our photo story!
